Positive input comes before Negative input (correction)

"Learners have two kinds of linguistic information at their disposal. The first is known as positive eveidence and refers to that limited set of (generally) well-formed utterances to which learners are exposed. The second, negative evidence, consist of information provided to a learner that her or his utterance is deviant in some way." p.346 of Second Language Acquisition - Gass, Selinker

Without first positive input ie. the ideal form, there is nothing to target, therefore no target form to acquire. Negative input can only come after one has first heard a target form to attempt.

  1. Here's the email I sent.
Okay so, it looks like we need 2 people for the opening and only 1 for the rebuttal. Sharon and JB - which one of you would like to do the rebuttal?

Here is my suggestion for organizing. Please feel free to change!

Opening: Kym and Sharon/JB - each of us summarize at least 3 articles (since we need 6 references) and combine our summaries to create an opening statement. I have 3 that I think will work and a few others that are "secondary". Let me know if you have others. The three primary ones are:
The Contribution of the theory of UG to our understanding of the acquisition of French as a second language (the one Heejung summarized)
Some implications of research in SLA for Foreign Language Teaching, and
An article I found on Google about Chomsky and Nativist Theory.

    The secondary ones are:
Second Language Acquisition Research: Staking Out the Territory,
    Evolutionary biology of language and
    History of Psychology.

Rebuttal: Sharon/JB - summarize some rebuttals to the arguments you think are most likely to come up, then we can add to it during our discussion time.

Closing: Heejung - Summarize what the nativist theory is and outline some of the points we are making. This is possibly just a summary of our opening statements?? We can add to it after we hear the other team's side.

How does this sound? Any suggestions?

  2. At this moment I cant think of the article I read, but I really do believe it should be included. It was well written. Also, Heejung mentioned to me that she would prefer not to do the closing.
